Most of my classes are taught in the Vinyasa Flow style, emphasizing the spiritual aspects of the practice described in sacred texts and teachings from many traditions. I encourage mindful breathing, inward listening, and non-judgment to cultivate a meditative attitude. This allows students to transcend the ego and witness the unchanging perceiver within. Students leave class feeling refreshed, relaxed, and more clear in mind and body.
I also teach Yin/Yang Yoga. Yin postures are passive, deep, and still. Holding them for 3-5 minutes nourishes the joints, produces gentle chi flow through the meridians, and balances organ function. Yin postures also provide a format for mindfulness meditation, a practice that cultivates insight and wisdom.
Yang style yoga focuses on careful posture alignment, smooth transitions, and calm muscular effort. This creates the strength, stamina, and flexibility necessary for grace and freedom of movement. Bringing attention to the actions of yang style postures develops 'skillful means,' the ability to act adeptly and appropriately in varying situations.
Practicing these complementary styles of yoga together promotes balanced wellness throughout every layer of the body and mind. Classes end with deep relaxation.
Additionally, I teach Restorative Yoga. Using props to comfortably support the body in seated and reclining therapeutic positions allows the breath to deepen and the mind to slow down while the muscles and bones sink into quiet stillness. This class provides an excellent way for people with active, busy lifestyles (or who are regularly engaged in strenuous activities like rock climbing!) to replenish and renew their energy.
Each class includes chanting Om, meditation, and conscious breathing techniques to quiet the mind and establish a foundation for focus. Classes end with savasana, a short seated meditation, and Om. From time to time, I also include formal pranayama (breathing practices) and Tibetan or Vedic Chants sung in Sanskrit.
